NSA computers

Despite the anonymity, NSA's role in computer development has been enormous. As far back as the mid-1930s, the Army and Navy SIGINT organizations were using complex machinery in both cryptanalysis and cryptography. The machines, using high-speed digital circuits and a punched-card format, were the forerunners of the modern computer. (p.134)
